“John Linebaugh was a fantastic shooter who passed away yesterday. A passionate supporter of the 45 Colt, the developer and custom builder of enormous bore sixguns, particularly the 475 and 500 Linegaugh. He will be missed. RIP”

John Linebaugh, a gunsmith from Cody, Wyoming, who was born on November 15, 1955, was well-known for making unique weapons.

He created the—500 Linebaugh and.475 Linebaugh cartridges in 1986 and 1988, respectively. Author and big-bore enthusiast John Taffin refers to Linebaugh as a “pioneer” in creating potent sixguns.

Early work by Linebaugh in the 1970s resulted in revolvers built to withstand far stronger.45 Colt loadings than ordinary weapons, and his efforts eventually expanded to include developing his cartridge designs. After developing the.500 and.475 Linebaugh, he later produced a 1.61-inch-long version of each cartridge and added “Maximum” to their names.

Linebaugh concentrated on creating revolver-compatible “old school” or “packable” cartridges rather than oversized ones.
