While GM of the Minnesota North Stars, he arranged for Frank Musil to defect from Czechoslovakia by obtaining an America work visa for Musil after he was allowed to travel to Yugoslavia for a vacation. Picked 38th overall by the North Stars in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft, Musil joined the team in July 1986.
