Richard Allen “Rich” Williams (born February 1, 1950) is a rock guitarist who has been a member of the Kansas band since their self-titled debut album in 1974. He has been with the band from its inception. Williams lost his right eye as a result of a pyrotechnics accident when he was a kid. His prosthetic eye was his go-to accessory for many years, but he now opts for an eye patch. In the beginning, Williams split guitar responsibilities with keyboardist/guitarist Kerry Livgren, who later became his primary collaborator. In the late 1980s, he collaborated on guitar with Steve Morse on a number of songs. Following a number of personnel changes in Kansas, Williams is currently the band’s only guitarist, but David Ragsdale may fill in on the additional guitar parts during the band’s performances of Fight Fire With Fire and Carry On Wayward Son, respectively. In fact, Williams and Phil Ehart are the only two Kansas members who have never left the band and have appeared on all of the band’s albums to date. Songs such as “Can I Tell You,” “No Room for a Stranger,” and the number one smash “Play the Game Tonight” are among those he co-wrote with the band.
